Sat 7.30pm, 26.50 THE ROTTEN HILL GANG Experimental indie. The late lamented World Trade Center was rebuilt on The O2 stage, with a bonus edifice accompanying the original two. At lights-down, the surrounding curtains fell to the floor, and there, amid no minor fanfare, were Muse, each perched in a cutaway halfway up one of the triplet towers. Factor in their leader Matt Bellamys zany shades, plus the rousing accompanying rendition of Uprising from this years album The Resistance, and it was quite an entrance, even for a band renowned for stadium-rock spectacle. Roughly 10 minutes later, during New Born, the podia sank to stage level, and a barrage of lasers strafed the mouth-agape audience. This, surely, was to be a landslide victory for the Teignmouth lads. Quickly, though, the energy drained out of the show. For the Queen-meets-Omar Sharif melodrama of United States Of eurasia, the three podia trundled back up again, with Bellamy tinkling at a grand piano. As with U2s claw, the undoubted expense of Muses hydraulic triple-whammy was disproportionate to the wow factor they delivered. Up and down they went, like Aunties bloomers after a torrid night on the curry. Worse, for Plug In Baby, a feeble smattering of balloons were unleashed -- those whod seen The Flaming Lips earlier in the week had been inundated with 10 times as many, in a hall a fraction the size. even while Bellamy warbled operatically of escape, rebellion and triumph, were Muse bowing to the recession? Never one for excessive repartee, the singer seemed sullen, off- form, occasionally attacking his guitar with dizzying widdly-widdly virtuosity, but palpably not buzzing on the thrill of performing for the here-assembled. Things picked up for the grungy Unnatural Selection, but there ended the set. For afters: a fragment of The Resistances orchestral climax, exogenesis, minus the orchestra. Fingers crossed for a recovery in 2010. in town last night... ROCK Muse TheO2 HHIII AndRew PeRRy listings London Jazz Fest KURT ELLING The jazz baritone singer.
