LITESPORT JAMES MILNER is hopeful he will be given a level playing field when battling with the likes of David Beckham for a place in Englands World Cup squad. There is a strong perception that Beckham is virtually guaranteed a spot inFabioCapellosplansforSouthAfrica despite playing only a bit part role as a substituteduringmostof thequalifying campaign. But Milner, who is expected to start against Brazil on Saturday, is confident that the manager will pick players on merit as he fights with the likes of Beckham, Aaron Lennon and Shaun Wright-Phillipsalthoughbeingversatile may help the Aston Villa winger. He said: Do I get the impression BeckhamisnailedonfortheWorldCup? I dont know. The only thing I can control is myself. That is all I can do. The World Cup is massive, withalotof media coverage good and bad, and as a player I just try and concen- trateonwhatIcan control and thats on the field and let everything else take care of itself. Will Capello give me as much chance as Beckham of getting into the squad? You would like to think so. He has proved that in selections before. He will play the play- ers on merit and on form. We want to take the best possible squad to a World Cup and it is a good thing that the manager will hopefully have difficult decisions to take. If he knows his squad already, it is too easy for him and not a good thing so the more pressure you can put on thmanager to have diffi- cult decisions to make, the better it is for England. You want everyone to have a level playing field and an equal chance to get into the team and get a chance to prove who should be in the squad. Meanwhile, Beckham is confident his decision to put club before country this weekend will not hamper his future in Capellos plans. The midfielder has opted out of the prestige friendly with Brazil in Doha to helpLAGalaxyintheirWesternConfer- ence final with Houston Dynamo. The England set-up know we are in the play-offs they expected that, said Beckham. It is not an issue they have sent their best wishes for the game. I am happy with where I am with England and I am happy we are in play-offs. 54 Thursday, 12 November 2009 London Lite MILNERWANTSVilla star wants to be treated like former skipper Inbrief Hodgson eyed for 2012 coach THE FA are poised to offer Roy Hodgson the job of coaching the Great Britain football team at the 2012 Olympics. The Fulham boss, who is currently locked in contract talks at Craven Cottage, is the man Olympic chiefs want to coach their fledgling team at the Games in three years. His stock has never been higher after leading Fulham to seventh place in the Premier League last season on a minuscule budget. Posh plan for lifeminusFergie PETERBOROUGH chairman Darragh MacAnthony insists the squad at London Road are good enough for a top-half finish in the Coca-Cola Championship this season - and he will appoint the manager to lead them to it within the next few days. He said: I want it done and dusted in the next few days. We have had over 200 applicants and managers who are at clubs in the Championship have sent in their CVs to me already. Luton enjoy a Gallen or two KEVIN GALLEN struck twice as Luton grabbed a shock 2-0 victory over wasteful Rochdale in their FA Cup first round replay at Spotland. The hosts had all the early pressure but were dealt a sucker punch in the 59th minute when Gallen struck from close range. The striker netted again 13 minutes later when he finished -- again from close range -- to set up a second-round tie away to Rotherham. Robinhos on comeback trail MARK HUGHES has not ruled out the possibility of Robinho making his comeback in Manchester Citys trip to Liverpool 21 on November. The Brazil striker has not played for the Blues since injuring his ankle on international duty in September. I wouldnt close the door on it, confirmed Hughes. He probably needs a couple of weeks to get up to speed before he is considered for selection. Wilshere wants Wembley date JACK WILSHERE expects to be fit and ready for the next round of the Carling Cup - and he is backing the young Gunners to go all the way to Wembley. The 17-year-old missed the victory over Liverpool in the last round with an ankle injury. He said: It was frustrating to miss the Liverpool game but I should be back to play Manchester City. Now that we are into the last eight it is realistic for us to win the trophy and go to Wembley. BY JAMES GOLDMAN I dont know. LiteSport understands there is no likelihood of Lord Triesman, the chairman of the FA, standing down from his 100,000-a-year role as bid chairman. Caborn said: The Prime Minister and the Government remain fully committed to this bid and believe this campaign can be won. We have delivered on every single promise we have made. We never promised to deliver 5m, but we have delivered a 2.5m loan and more than 350m in financial guarantees to underwrite the bid and meet FIFAs requirements. In addition local authorities supporting host cities will provide 250,000 up front, and around 10m each to underwrite the tournament. We do believe the bid requires re-organisation and a new direction to allow the team to focus on winning the votes we need rather than domestic squabbling. If that means that there is a need to scale down political involvement and withdraw then we will do that. If they argue that we are an impediment to the campaign, we will listen.
