The Tory leader pledged to match Labours commitment to eradicating child poverty but said a Conservative government would use community groups rather than the state to mend broken Britain. Mr Cameron said he would award welfare franchises to charities which could get the jobless into work or give other help to the needy. He stressed that he did not want government to withdraw from the welfare system -- saying he was keen for it to clear obstacles for social entrepreneurs to tackle poverty. In a scathing attack on big government, Mr Cameron said: Kindness, generosity and imagination are steadily being squeezed out by the work of the state. There is less expectation to take responsibility: to work, to stand by the mother of your child, to achieve, to engage with your community, to keep your neighbourhood clean, to respect others and their property, to use discretion and judgment. Work and Pensions Secretary Yvette Cooper declared that Mr Camerons attack on state welfare harked back to Thatcherism. She said: The voluntary and community sector play a vital role in tackling poverty, but they cannot do it alone. This is a return to Thatcherism.Cameron: state failures Miliband rules out taking on EU post PLEASE RECYCLE YOUR COPY OF LITE RESPONSIBLY PA LIME-GREEN building made of old shipping containers has become the first London 2012 Olympic Park venue to be completed. The low-budget View Tube at Stratford offers views of many of the Games venues currently being built. The spartan design is what remains of a pre- recession plan for a state-of-the-art centre. Visitors can observe the 6bn construction project taking shape from the viewing tower, while the building doubles as a community centre. Finished in plenty of lime... BorisrapsWireTory PBORIS JOHNSON has lashed out at shadow home secretary Chris Grayling for claiming parts of Britain are as crime ridden as US TV series The Wire. The Mayor said it was absolute nonsense to compare the capital to Baltimore, where the show is set. Mr Johnsons attack is another challenge to the Conservative party nationally, coming less than a month after he infuriated Tory leader David Cameron by demanding a referendum on Europe. PDAVID MILIBAND appeared to clear the way for a future Labour leadership bid today after ruling himself out of the running for a top Brussels job. After weeks of speculation, the Foreign Secretary told the European Socialists group that he was not interested in the new post of EU foreign affairs chief. He was seen as a frontrunner for the title but is understood to have rejected the idea to focus instead on his future in British politics -- a clear indication of his ambition to succeed Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Labour activists were reportedly furious at the idea of him abandoning the Government before next years general election.
