Get down to Brixton Village indoor market tomorrow at 4.30pm, where a collaborative project is aiming to fill 20 of the markets units with temporary and permanent projects. Best of all, you could get a unit free for up to three months. Obviously Whole Foods is quite useful for a quick fix but its prices are hardly recession- friendly. So 22 Monday, 9 November 2009 London Lite Keepit coolin hotnew woollies Quirkyknitshitthehighstreet N OW the mercury is finally heading south we can happily turn on the central heating without any pangs of guilt and, even more happily, break out the winter woollies to match. And these last few chilly days have turned our attentions to the amazing knitwear we can buy to keep us cosy. While theres no denying it isnt the sexiest of purchases, it is essential. We would always rather be splashing out on spangly party frocks and shoes we cant really walk in, but this is one time when practicality and style must meet some- where in the middle to ensure our much- needed knits are fun, too. Luckily designers and high street stores have heard our pleas for wacky woollens, and have been busy knitting and purling to bring us what we want and need. Our fave chunky knits come courtesy of McQ by Alexander McQueen, where huge, oversized fluffy jumpers in mono- chrome stripes and bold fuchsia are intended to be thrown on over a pair of tights and chunky boots for dressed-down winter styling with an edge. Prices start from 235. Other designers with quirky knits include Bella Freud -- we love the merino wool stripey sweater with signature dog intarsia (200), and the simple black jumpers emblazoned with Fashion. Sonia Rykiel also provides us with fun woollies, from brightly coloured stripes, to heart and crest embellishments and trompe loeil designs (from 170). Of course, if a quick fix is what you are after, get Bella-esque knits at asos.com, like Yumis geek chic red sweater dress (40), and at New Look where you will find a similar black sweater dress for 20. Also try Topshops Breton stripe jumper with eiffel tower print (32). If the home-made look is what you crave, find comforting styles at Lowie. Like something you swiped from your grannys attic, these flowery, vintage-inspired designs are super-cute -- just add a healthy dose of kitsch. Our faves are the cream and rose knee- high socks (77, ilovelowie.com) -- even if only worn for cosy nights in front of the telly.
