A TORY grandee defended his friendly approach to the opposite sex today after it emerged he had slapped a woman Labour MP on the bottom. Sir Nicholas Winterton, 71, patted Natascha Engel, 42, on the behind as the pair queued in the Commons Tea Room. Fellow MPs heard her shriek: I cant believe it. Sir Nicholas has just slapped my bottom! The incident came to light when it appeared on the blog of Labour MP Kerry McCarthy, who described the Tory MPs conduct as shocking behaviour. Ms McCarthy, Labours Twitter tsar, tweeted about the incident last night. Sir Nicholas, who is married to fellow MP Ann Winterton, said he could not remember the incident, but admitted it was certainly pos- sible. He said that if he had made any gesture, it would have been out of affection and regard. Asked if he often slaps bottoms, Sir Nicholas replied: I dont make a habit of it. You might do it now and again if you felt so disposed, if you had a sensible, friendly relationship with an individual. I have a friendly relationship with most members of the House, male and f e m a l e. C a n I remember this incident? No. Can I categorically d e n y i t ? N o . Perhaps, if these things were quite normal, you dont remember them. Ms Engel said: This is very embarrassing. It was just a stupid incident. Id rather not be slapped on the back- side. But he is an old man. It is not the end of the world. Ms McCarthy also said that another Tory grandee, Sir Nicholas Soames, had taken a slice of meat from the buffet with his bare hands and put it in his mouth. Sir Nicholas Winterton, the MP for Macclesfield, has faced severe criti- cism of his expenses after it emerged that he and his wife had claimed more than 165,000 of taxpayers money for a Westminster flat on which they had already paid off the mortgage. The couple lodged the claims after placing the 700,000 flat in a family trust for their children in 2002 and renting it back. Another MP who allegedly wit- nessed the slap said: Natascha was shocked. Sir Nicholas is someone she knows quite well. But that sort of behaviour is completely inappropri- ate. It is claimed that the slap hap- pened as Sir Nicholas queued to buy his lunch of a bowl of soup and a jam doughnut on Wednesday.
