Offended: Roxanne and Johnson; top left, bill with words blk couple ringed A student and his girlfriend are outraged after being called a black couple on their receipt by staff at a London pub. Johnson Abraham, 24, and Roxanne duhur, 21, claim they were the only couple dining when they received their bill at the slug And Lettuce in Islington Green. Mr Abraham, a mechanical engineering student from dalston, was at the pub last month with Ms duhur to celebrate her new job as an estate agent. they ordered at the bar, without a table number, before going upstairs to find a seat. When they went to pay for the meal the comment upstairs blk couple was printed on the bill. Mr Abraham said: I was outraged. they wouldnt have written white couple. I do class it as racism. It spoiled what should have been a celebration. slug And Lettuce area manager nick Odonnell said: We often put a note on orders to help reduce the chances of it being sent to the wrong table. I agree the language was inappropriate. I apologise for the upset caused. Mr Odonnell offered the couple a free meal with champagne, but Mr Abraham said: I want an apology. the manager apologised but the waitress hasnt. NEWQUAY-KYLE OF LOCHALSH: 1,002 RETURN Newquay, Par, Plymouth, Birmingham, Crewe, Inverness, Kyle of Lochalsh THE first 1,000 fare in the history of Britains railways has been unveiled. A first-class walk-on return from Newquay in Cornwall to Kyle of Lochalsh in Scotland is now 1,002. It is more expensive than a 755 round-the-world plane ticket from London, taking in Dubai, Bangkok, Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland. The rail fare is also dearer than the 1,000 cost of travel- ling from London to Zurich on the Orient Express, including dining in the restaurant car. The 1,700-mile round-trip cost 486 as recently as September last year, but breached the 1,000 mark in May. Passengers wanting a sleeper berth on the 20hr 30min trek would have to pay another 43 each way. The record-breaking fare emerged in a survey by rail expert Barry Doe. Despite the first-class ticket, trains on the first leg (Newquay to Par) and last section (Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh) do not even have first-class carriages, he said. Mr Doe added: For the first 183 miles to Bristol you might get a trolley service offering a cup of tea. You ought to be getting linen tablecloths and wall-to-wall service. TV traveller Michael Palin said: The fare is staggering. This is what happens in a free- market economy where rail- ways have been privatised. Its not a journey Ill be doing. Three companies share the route: First Great Western, CrossCountry and Scotrail. A spokesman for CrossCountry, the operator responsible for the ticket, said: Weve never sold one of these fares, but there has to be a fare for every route. The price of a first-class saver return [book in advance] is 561. There will be no Eurostar service between Britain and Brussels on Thursday because of a 24-hour general strike in Belgium from 9pm UK time tomorrow. There will also be a modified timetable to Lille. by Kevin Widdop H index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html24.html25.html26.html27.html28.html29.html30.html31.html32.html33.html34.html35.html
