POLICE officers called to an alleged assault in south-west London rushed to the scene -- by hopping on a bus. The manager of Greggs bakery in Morden dialled 999 after a member of staff was attacked and allegedly racially abused by a customer. But rather than see officers pull up in a squad car, with blue lights flashing, the manager watched in amazement as a team of officers arrived by public trans- port. The woman apparently fled the scene, also by bus, before they arrived. It happened on Saturday when a woman, believed to be in her sixties, became aggressive on being asked to leave the store. One worker was left with a cut to her face while others suf- fered minor injuries. Bakery manager Diana Homewood, 53, said: She got abusive and called my Saturday girl something I wouldnt like to repeat. She poked my colleague in the face and smacked me in mine. We called 999. Within minutes police had arrived, but we were shocked when we saw them getting off a bus. I know funding is tight, but thats ridiculous, I couldnt stop laughing. A Met spokesman said: A team of officers were dispatched and it may well be that they used public transport to get there or may have already been on the bus. If this was the quickest way to get to the scene of course they would have used it. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage of the incident. by kevin widdop Planning their future: Dan and his girlfriend Michelle Noble Firefighterdiesinhis firstkickboxingbout A firemAn was killed with a single blow to the head during his first kick-boxing match.
