London Lite Friday, 30 October 2009 23 Paper boy, 13, gets redundo letter saying he is laid off Boomtime forfive-star hotelboss A PAPER boy aged 13 could be Britains youngest victim of the recession after being laid off from his 6.93-a-week job. Kane Middleton was gobsmacked to receive a formal letter from his employer that detailed his employment rights and outlined his redundancy package. He was told he was entitled to one weeks pay in lieu of notice which equates to 6.93 (subject to tax and NI). The schoolboy was told that his employer, Letterbox Direct, had also fully assessed opportunities for rede- ployment within the company but had not found any. The letter said: Please be assured that this decision was nothing to do with the standard of your work -- it was purely based on marketing data. It gave strict instructions on where Kane should leave his news bag and trolley to be picked up and said he would be paid his deposit once it was decided the gear was in a reasonable condition. The teenager started the job two months ago to save up for a pet hamster. He delivered 100 copies of the local newspaper, the Bedfordshire Times And Citizen, in his village of Clophill. Kane said today he was gutted to have been dealt the same blow as adult workers during the credit crunch. He said: I felt winded when I saw the letter. I know the job market is tough but I want to work. I dont want handouts. All thats available to me now is car- washing and mowing lawns. Maybe dog-walking if Im lucky. His father Peter, 53, an electronics technician, said the letter was almost comical in its formality to a child. But he added his son was disappointed and worried he would not be able to afford to look after his hamster, Splodge. BILLIONAIRE hotel tycoon Sol Kerzner opens his third five-star venue in a year tonight and claimed his business was defying the crunch. Naomi Campbell and Simon Le Bon are among guests due at the opening of the 260m resort in Morocco. Kerzner, 74, said. We opened the Atlantis in Dubai in the recession and it has done extremely well. We opened the hotel in Cape Town and bookings have been good. by georgina littlejohn Entitledtoweekspay...6.93 Gobsmacked: Kane with his formal letter explaining his redundancy package Jokebox......... aninstantinterviewwith... Neil HaNNoN THE 39-year-old founder of the band The Divine Comedy has a new album with Thomas Walsh, under the moniker of The Duckworth Lewis Method. It is the worlds first concept album about cricket and is out now. Country life or city bustle? Im a country boy, but couldnt bear to live there. Evening ale or afternoon tea? Probably tea, whats better than tea and cricket? Married or footloose? I refuse to answer on the grounds I may incriminate myself. Tube or black cab? Well the Tube makes me sneeze, which is a great excuse to splash out on a cab. Quiet night in or night on the town? Quiet night in. Its an important moment when you stop fearing youre missing something by not going out. Cricketer Robbie Joseph or Robbie Williams? The former, because Ive never met him, and who you dont know, wont hurt you. Freddie Flintoff or Ian Botham? We played at Dublins Merrion Cricket Club at the weekend, and Ian Botham left early, so I didnt meet him. So I pick Freddie (right). Facebook or Twitter? I prefer the real world.
