His matine idol looks have seen him through a swathe of leading movie roles, as well as playing Graces unfaithful husband in uS sitcom Will & Grace. fame is different as an actor, he says. Theres an inaccessibility to musi- cians, whereas Will & Grace fans come up and touch you, its a physical thing. youre in their living room, so they feel like youre part of the family. They speak as if youre in character, like How could you Do that to Grace? Connick had the same kind of question after witness- ing the infamous Michael Jackson tribute while a guest panel judge on Australian TV, but hes loathe to see the controversy drag on, simply reiterating: Where I come from, blackface is a very specific and very derogatory thing. your Songs, which Connick is about to take on the road for almost a year, was conceived with music industry behemoth Clive Davis, the man behind Leona and Whitney. Its focus is the big, classic songs that everyone knows, from Sinatra via The Beatles and elton John to Nat King Cole and elvis, recast for Connicks retro big band sound. Hes used to working with leading ladies, but the final track duet -- a feather-light bossa nova take on The Beatles And I Love Her -- with Ms Bruni, first lady of france, must have been a coup. His wife Jill Goodacre, a former Victorias Secret model, worked with Bruni years ago. I kind of knew she sang, Connick says with a grin, but Jills a fan of her music, so I listened and thought, This could be interesting. I flew to Paris and we sang live, just like were sitting here. That takes the first take. It was great man, I dug her, I dug her whole approach. Shes really smart. I could see myself singing with her again easily.
