BY KEVIN WIDDOPPLANS to ban MPs who live within a one-hour train commute of West- minster from claiming for a second home in the capital have been attacked by politicians. The proposal would stop the 24,000 second home allowance for South- East MPs, who say they will be com- muting in the middle of the night. MPs in London also reacted furiously to the prospect of having their expenses slashed to ribbons under the leaked plans. At least 48 will have a 3,250 salary drop because standards watchdog Sir Christopher Kelly has decided the London salary supplement should be halved. The plans for members living less than an hour away were branded idiotic and woolly. Labours Sir Stuart Bell, a senior member of the House of Commons Commission, said it would be totally unacceptable to have South-East MPs forced to commute in the middle of the night and predicted that MPs might baulk at stripping them of second homes. He added: There may be a hung parliament after the next election and we could go back to very late sittings. It would be totally unaccept- able and very difficult for an MP to continue his duties if he could not claim a London allowance. Other reform plans include ban- ning MPs from employing family members and from claiming for mortgages. Sir Christopher is due to publish his report on 4 November.
