I just want to hug her. the 63-year-old is so lovely, offering to butter my toast and yapping away long after our 30 minutes are up, that I worry about her being exposed to foul-mouthed danny dyer on the set of thriller dead Man running. he was very courteous and so was everyone else, the actress, who co-stars with dyer and Curtis (50 Cent) Jackson, reassures me. In the Brit crime flick Blethyn plays another of those frumpy, salt-of-the-earth women she does so well (in this case the wheelchair-bound mum of an ex-con). In reality shes younger looking and loads more glam. People are often surprised, says the Oscar-nominated star of Secrets & lies and little Voice. they go, youre 20 years younger than I thought youd be or say, youre so pretty. ramsgate-born Brenda blushes when I mention her status as a national treas- ure. It sounds like Ive been dug up, she chuckles, or that Im about to be buried. Shes also flummoxed by being recognised. doing me shopping Ill say to my partner Michael, that woman theres staring at me. he reminds me its because shes seen me on tV. Born into a working-class Catholic family, Brenda anne Bottle (the Blethyn comes from her ex-husband) had no acting aspirations. Good lord no, she gasps. Id go to the cinema and it seemed the people on screen were from Mars. It never even entered me head I could be one of them. She trained as a shorthand typist, and it was only when she stood in for a sick cast member from the companys am-dram society that she fell for the smell of the greasepaint. It was like putting on something that fitted so well, she recalls. It felt comfortable. nowadays she specialises in what she calls the comedy of embarrass- ment. What embarrasses Brenda? Compliments, she says, fiddling with her scarf. Im polite and say, thank you but I dont know how to compose myself. Bless.
