LITESPORT 32 Tuesday, 27 October 2009 London Lite To Russian with glove: David Haye believes hes getting under the skin of Nikolai Valuev HayeslayingamindfieldforBeast DAVID HAYE believes he has won the mind game battle with the Beast from the East, Nikolai Valuev. The WBA heavyweight title challenger feels he has succeeded in riling the giant Russian with his jibes that he is a circus freak and ugly. Hayes tactic is to make Valuev come after him when they clash in Nuremberg on 7 November, leaving the champion open to his counter-punches. I definitely feel Ive got under his skin, said the former undisputed cruiserweight world champion. The word coming out of his training camp in Germany is that hes really motivated. Hes knocking all his sparring partners around and really wants to do a number on me. Thats great because I really want him to come out at me, swinging. The more aggressive he is, the better and I will be able to go to work with my counter- punches. So, so far, so good. This is one up for me in the mind games. And Im going to have something else planned for him at our press conference in Germany before the fight. For all his cockiness, Haye admits many boxing fans doubt his chances of beating the 7ft 2ins Valuev because he is inexperienced at heavyweight. I understand where those people are coming from. I know Im going into this fight with a lot of question marks hanging over me, but I just want to win the title as quickly as possible. by geoff teather MIDDLESEX have moved immediately to replace last seasons leading runscorer, Nick Compton, with Surreys Scott Newman. Compton, 29, who scored over 1600 runs, including five hundreds in First-Class and List-A cricket last season, asked to be released and has subsequently been snapped up by Somerset. Middlesexs Managing Director of Cricket, Angus Fraser, said: Obviously this is disappointing news for everyone at Middlesex. The Compton name has huge resonance at Lords, and it has been something that Nick has had to live with since signing for the club in 2001. We offered Nick a new two-year contract with a significant pay rise, but Nick feels he is at a stage in his life where he needs new challenges and a fresh start elsewhere. Middlesex have already compensated for the loss of Compton with the addition of Newman, who will add experience to what is still a relatively young squad. The 29-year-old has scored over 7,000 First Class runs and believes his move across the Thames will kick-start his career. He said: After a difficult season which saw me sent out on loan, I am delighted to have signed a permanent contract with Middlesex. I cant wait to play regular cricket at Lords. by james goldman Leadership battle is simmering for Cook Essexopenermay facepressurefrom guttedAnderson ALASTAIR COOK may just have started a full-blownleadershipbattlewithJamesAnder- son in the build-up to Englands tour to South Africa next month, by insisting: Id love to give the captaincy a go. Cook, 24, who has played 48 Tests for Eng- land, added: Its not like I wont be able to sleep at night if it doesnt happen. Cook was handed the vice-captaincy 10 months ago but he could face opposition from swing bowler Anderson, 27, who said this week: Its something Id like to do -- to be captainoneday. But,asafastbowler, andbeing from the North as well, I suppose Im very unlikely to get a look-in. Im gutted that I didnt get the vice-cap- taincy actually. It wasnt even mentioned to me, but Id like the chance one day. Ive been a captain in junior cricket in years gone by. The vast majority of Englands 78 skippers since 1877 have been batsmen. If Anderson, who has 42 caps, were to captain a Test match he would be the first fast bowler to lead the side since Bob Willis 25 years ago. Cook, who leaves with the squad for Johan- nesburg next week, adds: You never know how youll cope but ideally Id probably want to have more experience of captaincy at county level before I did it. But Ive been with England since I was 21, so I havent had much chance to do that. As yet, the vice-captaincy hasnt added any pres- sure. So being forced to think about other players and issues can be a help. by neal collins Bat to the future: England vice-captain Alastair Cook says he would love to captain England if the opportunity arises Comptonis replaced by Newman at Middlesex A Fresh challenge: Nick Compton index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html24.html25.html26.html27.html28.html29.html30.html31.html32.html33.html34.html35.html
