The proposed structure would connect Vauxhall to Pimlico and forms part of plans to transform 195 hectares of derelict land in Nine Elms, between Battersea and Vauxhall, into a bustling suburb. The cycle and pedestrian bridge is revealed in a draft strategy published today by Boris Johnson outlining plans for the develop- ment, dubbed the Vauxhall Village. The document suggests a similar cross- ing design to the Millennium Bridge -- between the Tate Modern and St Pauls -- which won notoriety for its lateral movement wobbles after opening in 2000. The Nine Elms scheme also envi- sions a new Thames path and an enhanced Nine Elms Lane. Extra capacity at Battersea Park train station and more bus services are also planned. However, with no public funding likely, a system of tariffs on developers has been proposed.
