London Lite Monday, 26 October 2009 11 by georgina littlejohn Fast-tracked: medal hopeful Vicky Olaoye hones her bob skeleton skills A BRITISH man jailed for 12 years for killing his wife and dumping her body in a lake was today appearing in court in France to appeal against the verdict. The body of Evelyn Lund, 52, was found two years after she went missing in 1999. Two years ago a jury in Albi, south- west France, convicted her husband Robert Lund, 57, of involuntary homicide. Lund, a former tree surgeon from Lancashire, is set to claim his wife was drunk and drove her car into the lake accidentally. The couple had moved to the region in 1997 but Mrs Lund, a mother of three, had wanted to return to the UK. Her body was found in her car when the water level at Lake Bancalie, 15 miles from the couples home, fell 30ft in a drought. The appeal, in Toulouse, is set to last for five days. Tory plan gives grandparents more access to grandkids GRANDPARENTS will be given more legal rights to see their grandchildren under new plans from the Conservatives. Shadow Cabinet minister David Willetts said a Tory government will make sure that grandparents have contact with grandchildren after a divorce or bereavement and are put top of the list to have custody of them if they face being put into care.Research has shown that grandparents are increasingly being relied upon to provide care, advice and financial help for their grandchildren. Vicky Olaoye, 25, was fast-tracked to compete for Britain after only a year in the sport. She has given up her job as a retail assistant at an Oxford Street sports store to devote her time to the event, in which the sled hurtles down an icy run at up to 60mph. Her story echoes Cool Runnings, the 1993 comedy film based on the story of the Jamaican bobsleigh team, who made their debut at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Vicky was introduced to the event last year under the state-sponsored Girls4Gold scheme to tap female athletes potential. Britain does not have an ice facility, so the national team uses a concrete dry run at its Bath University training base. Vicky, an ex- sprinter, said: First time I went down it was so scary, but the fear goes away and you get the rush to keep getting better. I didnt know anything about the sport a year ago but it intrigues me. My mates are a bit puzzled though. Her coach Mark Wood rates her as a medal contender for the 2014 Winter Games in Russias Black Sea resort of Sochi. He said: I would be extremely disappointed if Vicky was not in the mix.
