What, no scary posse from the mean streets of Bow? For all his cheeky-chappy crossover appeal, Mr Rascal usually keeps it real with a turntablist live show, but this was the Beebs Electric Proms, and orchestral ante-uppage was mandatory. The violins sawed away pleasingly for the self-aggrandising opener Jus A Rascal, but gradually such cod-classical embellishment felt alien to Dizzees sound bolted- on, pointless. His backing combo, meanwhile, might have been hired by a producer from CBeebies. Featuring cartoonish characters (a geek, a chubby wigga, etc), they trotted out Smells Like Teen Spirit (aka Stand Up Tall) and a specially-scripted Rage Against The Machine cover, but only cluttered up the old-skoolism of Pussyole and Leisure. Judging from his lack of repartee between numbers, Dizzee was having a mare. What shouldve been the nights big moments fell flat: Bonkers was rebooted as a cheesy bottleneck blues, while Dance Wiv Me was a mess of hectic time signatures. At the last, as he attempted to flow his way into a labyrinthine string arrangement, he stumbled and swearily called a halt. I dont care if its on telly, he semi-fumed, this is my sh*t. Well, it was meant to be. Electricnight ...butDizzee failstospark Falling flat: Rascal performing last night IN TowN LAST NIGHT...
