LITESPORT London Lite Wednesday, 21 October 2009 39 Team GB is relying on payer power THE size of Team GB at the London 2012 Games depends on how much money can be raised, British Olympic Association chief executive Andy Hunt said. The BOA told a meeting of sports governing bodies yesterday that the original plan of having 550 athletes depended on being able to raise 8m. So far around half that figure is available, which would mean a team of around 350 still more than the 311 who went to Beijing. Hunt said: We would like to have the broadest, most competitive team across all the sports we can, but we need to figure out what the cost is. Hunt said having the Olympics on home soil did not make it cheaper as it is far more complex not taking the team away to one location. The meeting was followed the official opening of the BOAs new home in Charlotte Street, London by its President, Princess Anne. Casey, who suffered a torn rib muscle practising for The Open and last played at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at the start of August has finally received the all-clear from his doctor. Although the injury is not 100percent repaired and there is a little discomfort in the area, I have been informed Im all clear to resume playing and practising as per normal, said Englands world No4. I am not expecting to be tournament sharp straightaway. However, Im very excited to be getting back to competition and resuming my challenge for the Race to Dubai. The Volvo World Match Play Championship is a great place to start, and I hope I can finish off this season the way I started it. Casey made it all the way to third spot on the world rankings after grabbing titles in Abu Dhabi in January, Houston in April and then the European Tours flagship BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. But he and fellow early season pacesetter Martin Kaymer have fallen back as a result of their respective injuries. Germanys Kaymer, who broke toes after a go-kart accident, makes his comeback tomorrow and said: If I get my form back quickly then I have a chance to win tournaments and the Race to Dubai itself. by james goldman Jenson gunning for Lewis and F1 is set for Battle of Button NEWLY-CROWNED world champion Jenson Button is ready to take on Lewis Hamil- ton in an all-guns-blazing Bat- tle of Britain next season. Hamilton has already been installed as hot favourite at 5-2 to win back the title next year with Button a lowly 12-1 to become the first Briton to win b a c k - t o - b a c k w o r l d championships. Button, indulging in a trium- phal homecoming at the Blue- water Centre yesterday, said: If Iminacompetitivecarand Lewis is in a competitive car next year, I think it will be a very exciting season for For- mula One and especially the British public. Having two worldchampionsback-to-back, it hasnt happened in 40 years and I dont know how many other countries have been able to achieve that. We should be very proud of all the work that has been put into the sport from all around the country -- the drivers, the mechanics, the engineers. Weve produced some fan- tastic talent in all those differ- ent areas. We should be very happy with ourselves. Button has yet to sign a new contract at Brawn GP but he insists he will not be lured away simply by money. He said: For me the most important thing in my career hasalwaysbeentobeinagreat car and this year is the first year Ive really been in that position. Iwanttocontinueachieving in the sport. Im not one of these drivers whos going to be looking for a newteamwhocanpaymeabig amount of money, thats not what Im about. I want to be with Brawn, we justhaventdiscusseditduring the season, which is the right thing to do so we could just concentrate on getting the titles. You always want more and achievingtheworldchampion- ships is a great feeling. Illenjoythatformanymore days but after that life goes on and you want to achieve greater things. That will be the aim and thats why I would like to do it with Brawn next year but we just havent discussed a con- tract for next year yet. Thatssomethingwelldoas soon as possible.
