Sven rejects Swedish lure NOTTS COUNTY director of football Sven-Goran Eriksson has ruled himself out of the running to become the new Sweden coach. The former England manager has decided he wants to concentrate on his role as director of football at Coca-Cola League Two side Notts County. Last week we made contact with Svennis, who is one of the people we thought could be a possibility for the job as national team coach, SvFF chairman Lars- Ake Lagrell said in a statement. We have had good discussions, but he has now decided that with regards to his contract with Notts County, there is no possibility of him taking charge. The national side can boast the talents of Eden Hazard, Thomas Vermaelem, Steven Defour and Mourane Fellaini along with AZs Dembele. In the past he suffered from not knowing his best position, but was rejuvenated last season as an out and out centre forward. ABOU DIABY ARSENAL ITS a strange truth that Arsenals most derided player appears to be a constant feature in Arsene Wengers side these days. It helps that Diaby, who now finally appears to be capable of playing back-to-back games, broke the leg of his most likely replacement, Samir Nasri, in pre-season, but in recent weeks he has made a semi decent case to suggest Nasri may have to fight harder than expected to win back his place immediately. DangerLyoninwaitforLiverpool RAFAEL BENITEZ goes into European combat tonight insisting he still has confidence in his Liverpool squad, despite three successive defeats. Benitez will have skipper Steven Gerrard back from a groin injury against Group E leaders Lyon at Anfield in a crunch Champions League clash, but he is still missing striker Fernando Torres with a similar injury. Benitez maintains, however, Liverpool can cope without one or both of their two best players, but he also knows another defeat tonight will send the Reds into crisis. Benitez said: We have been criticised, but I am happy with the squad. The vast majority of them were here last season. People say we cannot play without Gerrard and Torres. I was not worried at the weekend even though we lost at Sunderland when we were without both of them, so now with one back it is even less of a problem. Meanwhile, 20m summer signing Alberto Aquilani will make his Liverpool debut in a reserve outing against Sunderland tomorrow. The Ivory Coast international appeared destined for the Emirates exit door after he was booed off against Wigan last season. His future was a constant source of speculation over the summer, fuelled by the act of throwing his shirt into the crowd following a pre-season win over Hannover 96. Arsene Wenger fought hard to resist big-money offers from the likes of Fiorentina and Atletico Madrid for the versatile right-sided player (right) in the close season. And the managers faith in the often erratic Eboue has been repaid with a series of eye- catching performances. Eboue left the field to a standing ovation against Birmingham on Saturday, and the jeers have now been replaced with chants of youve only come to see Eboue directed at visitors to Emirates Stadium. Eboue, who is likely to play in a more advanced role this evening, having played at right-back on the weekend, said: On this I just want to say thank you to my boss and the fans because they help me a lot. I was very disappointed with my performance last season but now I feel Im doing well and Im happy. I want to give my best for the fans. Another of Arsenals African contingent to have won over the home fans is Alexandre Song, who has drawn praise from Wenger for his recent performances at the base of Arsenals midfield. Wenger, who is likely to be without knee injury victim Theo Walcott, for a month, said: He likes a tackle. Cameroon people are strong, you know? In Africa they call them the Germans of Africa because of their strong bodies. The veteran Wasps prop, 33, needs surgery on his neck and faces a rehabilitation period in excess of three months. Wasps said: Phil has been closely monitored over the last week and a collective decision has been made this week to progress with surgery. Vickery (above), Englands World Cup captain in France two years ago, made a successful recovery from neck and back injuries earlier in his career. Vickerys news comes less than 24 hours after his fellow prop Andrew Sheridan was sidelined for up to four months after a shoulder dislocation.
