Mehmet Goren, 49, suddenly slumped in his chair, causing court officials to leap to their feet and call for medical assistance. Mr Justice Bean immedi- ately halted proceedings and the jury was led from the court. Goren had been watching his wife Hanim give evidence for the prosecu- tion about their 15-year-old daughter, Tulay. The schoolgirl disappeared in 1999 after falling in love with an older man her family disapproved of, Halil Unal. The court has heard Goren and his two brothers killed the girl to stop her marrying, which they believed would bring shame on the family. Her body has never been discovered nor any alleged murder weapon found. Goren was arrested at the time but no charges were brought. However, the case was reopened 10 years later and Mrs Goren agreed for the first time to be a witness. The court has heard that both the Mehmet family and Mr Unal were originally from the Kurdish region of Turkey but belong to different sects of the Muslim faith. Mehmet Goren is alleged to have murdered Tulay, after consulting his brothers. Mehmet, from Woodford Green, together with his brothers Cuma Goren, 42, and Ali Goren, 55, both of Walthamstow, deny murdering his daughter. They also deny conspiracy to murder Mr Unal between May 1998 and February 1999.
