Plus, any attempt to look fashionable is ruined by a last- minute chunky jumper thatll keep you warm but renders your outfit shapeless. But I think Ive figured out the answer to our challenging climate. Over in New York last week, I presented a show for Vogue.TV (called 60 Seconds To Chic) on plastic-shelled, faux fur-cuffed boots by Sorel. These dead ringers for the nerdy mucking-out boots I used to wear in stables as a kid are now Coverupinstylebyfakingit STREETSTYLEInassociationwithSpecsavers ANIMAL PRINT 16, Accessorize A SUBSTITUTE is rarely better than the real thing (well take diamonds over cubic zirconias any day), but in matters relating to fur, faux is the best way to go. Spotted on celebrities, London Fashion Week attendees and the pavements of Oxford Circus, fur is the cover-up of choice for the brisk autumnal weather and gilets, jackets and coats are the preferred way to sport a pelt this season. The best part of the trend is that fur works with abso- lutely everything, adding vintage flair to a casual jeans- and-trainer combo, or rock- star appeal when worn over your favourite minidress. River Island has a great selection of faux fur coats and jackets in a variety of styles. If youre after a classic look, the vintage-inspired black coat with diamant buttons (69.99) is a safe bet, while risk-takers can find Eighties- inspired jackets in white and black prints and even a hot pink version (64.99). Wallis also has a range of faux fur bomber jackets with high collars for added warmth. Take your pick from solid neutral colours including ivory and chocolate brown, and also jungle print and faux rabbit styles (starting at 60). Also, check out Monsoons faux fur capes, gilets and coats in steely grey and biscuit, which start at 45. They come in varying lengths from cropped to below-the-knee, so youre sure to find something to suit your taste. If youre looking to spend more than 100, Kate Moss for Topshops chocolate faux fur jacket with exag- gerated Eighties shoulders allows you to work two trends at once (120). For a designer gilet with a touch of boho glamour, try Rebecca Taylors (355) at net-a-porter.com, which looks great with denim. If youre terrified of looking like Bigfoot, there are plenty of ways to experiment with fur this autumn. Try a coat with faux fur cuffs or collar, or a pair of furry boots. However, there is one pitfall to avoid: fur is a statement in itself (especially if you go for a coloured or printed style), so be sure to keep accessories non-furry and simple. You dont want to look like fashion roadkill.
