Having found a decent learners instrument, Matthew and I sit down to start -- in the middle of the shop. Matthew first talks me through the tuning. The classic ukulele has four nylon strings. The name itself comes from Hawaii, where the instrument originated, and translates as jumping flea. The way you hold the uke is important, Matthew explains: it needs to be at a 45-degree angle, not horizontal like youd hold a guitar. This gives your chord hand more freedom to move around. Picture yourself holding a sandwich if it helps. Just dont try eating it. You strum with the index finger -- down with nail and up with pad -- and with as much wrist movement as possible. This is the common strum, and most of the more complicated rhythms involve constantly moving your hand but leaving out some strums and accentuating others. UKLEARMELTDOWN OPEN C is the first chord I learn -- an easy one, followed by A minor. We rock back and forth between these for a while, always putting down a finger before taking the next off. Next I add an F to my tally, fol- lowed by G7. Thats four chords under my belt -- Oasiss entire back catalogue is within my grasp. The surprising thing is how easy the whole process is: by moving the fingers of one hand and strumming with the other youre an instant uke-player -- all thats missing is the hula girls. After learning the basics so I can play some classic songs -- among them Cant Buy Me Love and Princes ukulele classic, U Got The Look -- we finish in cleaner Fifties style with Hound Dog. The ukulele is a cheerful instrument, and its difficult not to feel good about life as you strum along.
