30 Monday, 12 October 2009 London Lite30 Monday, 12 October 2009 London Lite IN&OUTTONIGHT THE under-18s are banned from these four scarily good half- hour horror plays by Lucy Kirkwood, Mark Ravenhill, Anthony Neilson and Neil LaBute. And while you will have seen scarier episodes of Neighbours, its understandable. No parent would want their child sitting through LaButes dark portrayal of the do-it-yourself porn industry. In Kirkwoods Psychogeography were in the barely lit basement of a house with a dark past. Prospective buyer Maxine (Zoie Kennedy) is interested in bagging a bargain but Ian (Matthew Wilson) is reluctant, sparking a brutal power struggle. Mark Ravenhill performs the world premiere of his monologue The Experiment. Its a self- contradicting stream of consciousness in which he tries to justify injecting cancer cells into his own children for two, three, six months, four years, to find a cure to the disease. Neilsons Twisted, with Trudi Jackson and Adrian Schiller, imagines a parole meeting in which the doctor doesnt quite have the prisoners best interests in mind. And LaButes Some White Chick -- also a world premiere -- is a devastating portrayal of a couple of young men who choose a horrendous way of making money. Scaring audiences is largely about suggestion and Kirkwoods play is the only one to get this spot-on. But if you see Terror 2009 as a chance to enjoy genuinely disturbing works by top playwrights, rather than as a build-up to Halloween, you wont leave disappointed.
