Since then, she has had a softly-softly approach to stardom. A radio series here, an ITV2 ensemble sketch show there, a bit part in Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouses last vehicle. But this new work, Rabbit Faced Story Soup, confirms that Solon has the talent to be a major comic force. What is most exciting is that this show marks a significant stylistic advance. When Solon won the Perrier with her character comedy, there were clear nods to Victoria Wood and French and Saunders. Here, in a whimsical narrative set in the publishing world, she finds her own voice as a peasant- squashing oligarch, a ball-busting agent, her ambitious assistant and various other inspired turns. Solons monologue tells the tale of a literary agency plunged into crisis when their top author goes missing. With sure-footed grace, she portrays the absurd ripple effect, which sees her embrace canine electrification in a Jacuzzi. In one nuanced scene, she becomes the avant-garde, Gallic anti-novelist, Didier Auberge, who refuses to use punctuation. The pleasure here is in the writing as much as the performance. The star has a keen ear for accents and for a succinct, well-turned phrase. It is ironic that the plot involves finding someone to finish a book. With skill like this, Solon could probably write a bestseller herself. lUntil 17 October (020 7478 0100, sohotheatre.com).
