LITESPORT London Lite Thursday, 8 October 2009 47 OUT OF CONTROLBREAKING NEWS... Owais hit by England axe OWAIS SHAH, who scored a superb 98 at Centurion just 11 days ago, said today he was extremely disappointed to be axed from the Test and one-day squads for Englands return to South Africa. Middlesex star Shah (right), who hit six sixes to put the hosts out of the Champions Trophy, said: I performed reasonably well in helping England to get to the semi- finals, but Ive been overlooked. I was told I havent been consistent enough. I thought I was playing well. Sure, I didnt have a great series against Australia in the summer, but I was hitting the ball reasonably well. I feel I have plenty to offer the one- day team, but I guess I just have to wait and see which way the selectors go. Im just disappointed. ALL WRIGHT ON THE FLIGHT: PAGE 44 by Rooney! Rooney, the leading scorer in European qualifying with nine goals so far, says: Were delighted weve qualified. When you see Italy jostling with Ireland for top spot, and Argentina struggling to qualify, it is exciting for us. The confidence will grow within the squad. To get into the England team under Fabio Capello, you always need to be playing at your best for your club. These last two matches are important. We need to go through unbeaten, and, ideally, we want six points. The manager has made it clear that is what he wants. from Aberdeen in November 1986 when United were trying to re-establish their credentials as Englands top side. He stuck by the United boss through some sticky times before the first of 11 Premier League titles came in 1993. Sir Alex has had one hell of a run. I think hell move on when hes 70 Trophy hunters: Martin Edwards and Sir Alex Ferguson celebrate another Premier League title James says its hard being No1 DAVID JAMES has warned Englands up- and-coming goalkeepers there are few tougher jobs in football than being No1 for the Three Lions. James is back in Fabio Capellos squad after missing the last five internationals due to a shoulder problem, but the 39-year-old has found himself replaced as first choice by West Ham keeper Robert Green. Its a cliche to say people will always come out the other side after a bit of criticism, because it doesnt always happen. Playing for England is a difficult job, you have to go through these things. Miklosko: Green fingers are the safest in England WEST HAM hero Ludek Miklosko believes Fabio Capello would be crazy to ditch Robert Green just at the point when hes beginning to get used to life as Englands No1. Miklosko has been West Hams goalkeeping coach for the past eight years and is better placed than most to comment on the England goalkeeping conundrum having tutored both Green and his main rival David James. Portsmouth veteran James is now fully fit and back in Englands squad for the two final World Cup qualifiers, against the Ukraine on Saturday and Belarus next Wednesday, but Miklosko believes Green (right) has the edge in the race to be Fabio Capellos first choice. I would say Rob is the best goalkeeper that I have ever worked with, said Miklosko (inset). He has improved massively since he joined West Ham from Norwich and hes the perfect age for an international keeper. One of Robs biggest areas of improvement has been in taking crosses. Ironically, he came and missed one in the game against Fulham on Sunday. But if you watch the incident again, you will see that he gets a little nudge. Against Manchester City in the previous game he conceded a goal he perhaps should have saved from a free-kick but there was plenty going on in front of him and he was unsighted. That can happen to anyone. Ive worked with Robert for three seasons now and I see how hard he works. He puts in extra sessions on most afternoons, he does pilates on a regular basis to help improve his flexibility, he listens to advice and is always trying to improve. In the last two matches things have been against him but West Ham supporters will tell you that, over the long period, he has hardly made a mistake for the club.
