32 Thursday, 8 October 2009 London Lite Make no mistake, this is heavily influenced by Shaun Of The Dead. Indeed, Im surprised Hollywood took so long to rip off Simon Peggs zomcom. But here it is and its, well, pretty good. Columbus (Jess eisenberg, the poor mans Michael Cera) is a games geek who, stuck before his screen 24/7, escapes the virus that turns nearly all of america into flesh-crazed zombies. Soon, however, he emerges to find all is not well, and he decides to make a run for his family home. along the way, he falls in with three other survivors: Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson, mugging and gurning for all hes worth), a redneck survivalist who finds his calling is dispatching the undead; devious hottie Wichita (emma Stone), and her hard- as-nails but Hannah Montana- worshipping younger sister Little Rock (abigail Breslin). Their mission? To head to La where theyve heard theres a zombie-free zone. Theres a lot of gore, some good lines (Time to nut up or shut up; First girl I let into my life and she tries to eat me) and a dazzling, hilarious cameo by a huge Hollywood star (itd spoil the surprise to say who). Zombieland isnt as witty as Shaun Of The Dead but its a decent addition to the growing zomcom canon. Toy Storys central character was a cowboy puppet, Ratatouilles was a rat, WaLL-es was a futuristic dustcart and now, with Up, we have an old man, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen (voiced by ed asner) with the square, grey head of Spencer Tracy and the cussedness of Clint eastwood in Gran Torino. This is hardly the most conventional of storylines, either, essentially being about a super-grumpy old man who, unable, to deal with the grief caused by his wifes death and encircled by avaricious property developers trying to snaffle his marital home, ties thousands of helium balloons to the house and sails off to find Paradise Falls in Venezuela. With a chubby Boy Scout, Russell. Who looks just like comedian Michael McIntyre. Up was written and directed by Pete Docter, who wrote Toy Story, directed Monsters Inc and helped co-write WaLL-e before leaving the project to concentrate on Up. But save them from what? This documentary outlines the issues (30 per cent of the worlds food is reliant on honey bees pollinating plants) and examines the problems (billions of bees are disappearing) but its conclusions on what is causing this are woolly (most likely pesticides). So, heres his pointless sequel to his pointless remake of Halloween. Its rubbish. The directorial debut of Peter strickland, this visually and sonically arresting thriller (and despite initial impressions it is a thriller) focuses on the heroine of the title, who is banished from her village by her husband when he discovers their 11-year- old son, Orban, is not his. Forced onto the road with Orban, a desperate Katalin (hilda Peter) takes matters into her own hands with consequences that are not only utterly unforeseen but absolutely convincing. A robust and beautiful piece of cinema.
