Palms Pre is the latest in a list of gadgets dubbed the iPhone killer, but the first that comes close to living up to its billing. Its an incredibly slick handset, a little smaller than its rival, yet chunkier. The Pre isnt quite as intuitive as apples product, although when you first switch it on a video explains how it works. as well as tapping on icons, you can use gestures -- for instance, to remove programs you arent using you can flick them off screen. Its a well thought-out system once youre used to it, and the interface looks far smoother than apples. The slide-out keyboard is small but just big enough to allow easy typing. The Pre, which comes free with contract, also has a 3.2-megapixel camera and an lED f lash, giving it a big advantage over the iPhone. Charging is a revelation: the idea of dropping it onto the base is a huge step forward, and one hopefully more manufacturers will use. The biggest problem is that there arent many applications to download. While apple boasts 60,000, Palms can be counted on one hand. The music software is a bit clunky and the confusion over whether you can use iTunes is a real disappoint- ment -- from a consumer point of view, its an absurd situa- tion. The iPhone still has the edge due to the huge range of apps and its brilliant music playback. But for the first time its really not an easy choice to make.
