GEORGE MICHAEL today denied he had broken up with his long- term lover Kenny Goss after 13 years together. His agent said reports of a split were a complete fabrication. The Mirror had claimed that 50-year-old Goss had walked out on the Careless Whisper star, 46, when he was charged with drug possession after being arrested in public toilets on Hampstead Heath last year. The paper claimed that the art gallery owner left their London home at Christmas but kept the split quiet. It was alleged that Michael had been hit so hard that he postponed all work commitments and behaved like a hermit -- sleeping until late at his Highgate mansion, then smoking cannabis and playing computer games until the early hours. The paper quoted one source as saying: Kenny had given George many chances. But after the Hampstead Heath incident he said he couldnt take any more. further notice. TV producer Mr McGee, who had fought drug addiction, posted a despairing message on his Facebook page at 5am yesterday saying death is better than life. Friends alerted police, but he was dead when officers broke into his Edinburgh flat three hours later. He had undergone spells in rehab and reportedly regularly spent large sums on cocaine, sometimes staying high for days. Lucas and Mr McGee married in December 2006 in a pantomime- themed ceremony at London private members club Home House. Lucas dressed as Ali Baba while Mr McGee was Prince Charming. Sir Elton John, Paul OGrady, Barbara Windsor and Courtney Love were among the guests. Just 18 months into the marriage, the relationship was over after Mr McGee admitted his unreasonable behaviour had caused an irretrievable breakdown. In what became the first celebrity gay divorce, High Court District Judge Caroline Reid granted a quickie decree. Friends of Mr McGee said he had appeared in high spirits recently. He had moved to Edinburgh and was studying for a degree. A neighbour said: A month ago he bought a labrador puppy. He seemed a nice guy with no signs of any obvious problems. He never mentioned Matt Lucas. Shortly before his death he changed his Facebook profile status to read: Kevin McGee thinks that death is much better than life. Several friends replied to the dark posting, unaware he was dead. A friend of Lucas said: Matt was floored when he heard the news. He always loved Kevin despite their differences and their difficult marriage. Lucas, who has refused to dis- cuss the circumstances of the break-up, admitted last month it had been tough. He said: Im in a much better place than I was. Time is a great healer. The producers of Prick Up Your Ears, which is being staged at The Comedy Theatre, said: Our thoughts are with Matt. Until further notice, his role will be played by his understudy, Michael Chadwick. Police said today there were no suspicious circumstances to the death.
