As shadow chancellor George Osborne prepared to address the Conservative Party Conference, Mr Darling last night announced a freeze on the public sector salaries of 750,000 senior and middle-ranking civil servants to help keep Britains finances under control. Judges and GPs are among those who will be hit next year, while prison officers, hospital doctors and dentists will receive increases of less than one per cent. But to placate troops in Afghanistan, the Armed Forces will be exempted from the move. The Chancellors announcement came just hours before Mr Osborne spoke today at the conference in Manchester. He announced a Tory Government would impose a one-year pay freeze on the majority of public sector workers as part of a package of austerity measures designed to get the state deficit under control. Earlier, the Tories likened Mr Darlings timing to Prime Minister Gordon Browns trip to Iraq during the Tory conference in 2007. Leader David Cameron said: What the Chancellor said last night, I thought, was slightly cynical in timing. Its also quite insubstantial in content and its not part of an overall approach. Lord Judges comments, made in a Court of Appeal ruling, follow concern about figures showing only half of offenders caught with a gun get the mandatory five- year minimum term. It means more life sentences and longer minimum terms are likely to be handed out. PTHE former head of the Army today accused Gordon Brown of forcing British troops in Afghanistan to fight with part of one arm tied behind their back. General Sir Richard Dannatt confirmed suspicions that a plea for 2,000 extra troops had been rejected this year. Downing Street has denied that the Prime Minister turned down requests for reinforcements. But Sir Richard, who retired in August, said: Military advice has been for an uplift since the beginning of 2009. If youre going to conduct an operation, youre doing it for a reason: to succeed. Dont lets do it with at least part of one arm tied behind ones back. He added: If the military says we need more troops and we can supply them, then frankly they should take that advice. A total of 219 British troops have died in Afghanistan since 2001 and there are about 9,000 in the country as part of the Nato force fighting the Taliban. Sir Richard said he left office convinced that Mr Brown understood the issue and was ready to commit to action.Rebuffed: Dannatt -- Robbie WiLLiams reveals he will never tour again because the last one gave him a nervous breakdown Do you know Susan Boyle?
