Boyszone The weekend-long events are held annually in cities all over Britain and have a cult following. At least this is what my friend from Sheffield, who had done the Rat Race there, told me. Keen to try the London version, he registered on the site, signed me up with him and said I owed him 99. Nice. TypicalSaturdayevening? AT 5PM on Saturday, I turned up at the Rat Races event village near Tower Bridge and joined the 1,000 con- testants warming up while a Mrs Motivator jumped around on the stage. We were put into teams of two or three, and given maps and clue sheets with a grid reference to a checkpoint where we were to face weird and wonderful challenges. We had to visit as many checkpoints as possible in any order and by any route, returning to the event village by 7.30pm. The team with the most points at the end would be the winners. S IGHTSEEING is seldom action- packed but adventure racing -- running, cycling, climbing and making a fool of yourself at various points around London -- takes urban tourism out of the hands of guide bookers and into the rucksacks of adrenaline junkies. Theconcept ADVENTURE racing involves running and bicycling between iconic landmarks, follow- ing clues and completing crazy challenges. 12 Tuesday, 6 October 2009 London Lite The Lite guy guide to cigars Cuban: Fidel Castro with a Havana EXPERIENCE LONDON AS YOUVE BY EWAN FLETCHER Youtough enoughfor Adventure Racefun? Test Squeeze the foot of the cigar, not the middle, to test its correctly humidified. It should be springy. Clipping Wet the mouth end and clip a couple of millimetres off the cap with cigar cutters. Leave a small amount intact. The draw Puff the unlit cigar to check it is drawing properly. If its too loosely packed its a windbag. Lighting Use a wooden match or butane lighter as petrol lighters or candles can taint the cigar. Dont inhale It will make you sick. Slowly puff away. Age A well-rolled and aged cigar will have straight, grey ash -- if its dark and falling apart its poorly made or young, but may mature. Storage Central heating is fatal -- keep cigars away from radiators. Cost Between 6 and 44 each, but the priciest arent necessarily the best. Conversation and company are the most important factors.
