IN one corner it looks like some- one has knocked over a couple of cans of paint, while across the room sits an empty chair. No, its not an abandoned DIY job, but entries for this years Turner Prize. The black-and-white composition on the floor is in fact the metal dust of an atomised passenger jet, while other offerings include the skull of a whale and sculptures made from melding cow brains with plastic and steel. The work was unveiled at Tate Britain today as the shortlist for the 25,000 art prize, now in its 25th year. Lucy Skaer, 34, the only woman on the shortlist, is show- ing the skull of a sperm whale next to a series of 26 sculptures made from coal dust. Italian-born Enrico David, 43, a Central St Martins graduate and based in London, incorpo- rates childrens dolls and images from gay pornography but his exhibit is more disturb- ing for the distended bodies and sinister car- nival figures. Londoner Richard Wright, 49, is the most traditional of the four artists.
