Shes got all the beauty and charm of Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 film, as well as the air of mystery the role requires, thanks to the Brookside lesbian kiss. And its the dark element of Hollys character that is being exposed here. Samuel Adamsons witty script is an adaptation of Truman Capotes bitter 1958 novella, rather than the saccharine film that followed it. There are a few scenes that movie connoisseurs wont recognise and its set in the Forties rather than the Sixties. Plus theres the big difference between the Hollys: hair colour. if anything, the characters controversial way of making a living is even more brushed over here than it was in the Sixties version. Holly is a sexy (yes, Friel does get naked), outspoken, unattached woman whose infectious desire to constantly have fun -- especially if shes getting paid for it -- makes everyone fall in love with her. When penniless writer William (impressive 23- year-old Joseph Cross) moves into the flat below hers, he becomes her number one fan. But he hasnt got the money the social climber is after. Still, Holly keeps him hanging. And those who dont know the story will have no idea whether shell eventually opt for money or romance. The beautiful costumes and the slick, rotating, rising and lowering set show how much money has been pumped into the production. And Friels moving singing and fake guitar playing add a musical element. But the drama loses a little energy in the second half, perhaps because we see less of the brilliant supporting actors, James Dreyfuss OJ Berman -- a kind of agent to Holly -- in particular. Ultimately this is the Friel show, though. And shes such a captivating leading lady we can even forgive the occasional slip in her American accent and fall in love with her, just like everybody else. lUntil 9 Jan IN TowN LAST NIGHT...
