BRITISH AIRWAYS today launched the first direct flight from London City Airport to New York, in a gamble to improve the airlines dire finances. The company is running a busi- ness class-only service with just 32 luxury seats -- cost- ing a minimum 1,901 return -- on Airbus A318 jets designed to carry 109 passengers. The move has been slammed by environmental groups. BA, which lost 410m last year, hopes to attract bankers travelling to JFK airport for Wall Street meetings. But experts view the move as risky, after a slump in international corporate travel from London. The number of business seats booked service will feature 32 flat beds and technology that allows passengers to text, email and use the internet. However, the journey time of nine hours and 25 minutes is less impressive. There is an enforced stop at Irelands Shannon airport to refuel, as London Citys runway is too short for a fully fuelled Airbus.
