Police at the G20 summit in Pittsburgh were today bracing themselves for further confrontations, follow- ing clashes with anti-capitalist protesters. officers fired rubber bullets as the crowd tried to break through police lines. Bins were also set alight. But the demonstrators -- many dressed in black and holding anarchist flags -- managed to progress only a few blocks before being repelled by armed officers. Stones were thrown at police, who deployed tear gas as they made 15 arrests. The disturbances are thought to have begun after pro- testers tried to march, without permission, towards the convention centre where the summit is being held. Meanwhile at the sum- mit, Gordon Brown pre- dicted historic moves to co-ordinate the worlds biggest economies would save jobs.
