Barbican Silk St, EC2 (020 7638 AustrAliAn bands regularly perform at big london venues and ordinarily go unnoticed by anyone other than their countrymen. Brisbane twin sisters Jessica and lisa Origliasso -- the Veronicas -- have bigger plans. since conquering their homeland, where their second album Hook Me up went double platinum in 2007, the pint-sized pair have upped sticks to los Angeles to take on the rest of the world. Hook Me up is only getting a full release here next month, but if the pair are sick of its songs two years on, they didnt show it. Earlier hits such as Everything im not were chugging pop- punk from the Avril lavigne mould, before they turned to whizzy electronica for the second album. in both styles they produced amazingly catchy tunes. in concert they all but buried the synths under rock sludge, losing the crispness of uK hit untouched, but it was nice to see a pop act so unconcerned with polish. An acoustic interlude, including melodic highlight this love, was necessary to prevent a feeling of being completely steamrolled. Between songs, the Origliassos charmed as energetically as they sang. if you sold records through effort alone, theyd be number one tomorrow. Twinscharmwith unpolished pop IN TowN LaST NIGhT...
