So hes taken a short cut by redirecting his ground-breaking, award-winning 1992 production of JB Priestleys an Inspector Calls. His vision of putting the arrogant Birling family in a poky little house on stilts above a rainy, desolate Second World War landscape is still as magical and audacious as ever -- the familys smug engagement party becomes secondary to the emptying of a bucket of slops downstage. and its not until Inspector Goole pays a visit to investigate a death, that the characters explode out of their exclusive little world and show their darker sides. Standout performances are Sandra Duncans stern Mrs Burling and Marianne Oldham, who plays her daughter. But the main attraction is still the magnificent set and Daldrys split- stage brainwave that has made it hard to imagine the play done any other way. lUntil 14 Nov Callthisamagicalreturn Standout performance: Marianne Oldham IN TowN LAST NIGHT...
