After the 6-1 series thrashing against Australia, that shouldnt be difficult. But winning might be tough. England start with Sri Lanka at the Wanderers on Friday, knowing they crushed the worlds No1 ranked side and hosts South Africa as the first rains of summer broke in Centurion last night. But Onions (below), who experienced victory on his ODI debut against the Aus- tralians at his Durham home ground Chester-le-Street on Sunday, adopts the view: Ive got the ball in my handandIcangetthisguyout. Thats the bottom line. Its bowler versus batter. A good example of that is when I bounced Ricky Ponting out recently. It is the first time in his career I believe he has been bounced out. People had told me whateveryoudo, dont bounce Ricky Pon- ting. I just thought I would give it a go. I am in the early stagesof mycareer and everything is happening for me. There will be toughtimes,of course there will, but I would like to think I have learned from the past, so that when they do come along they will be slightly easier. Onions, 27, has enjoyed a fine start to his Test career, his 20 wickets in just five games enough to merit a shortlisting in theInternationalCricketCouncilsemerg- ing player category at next weeks awards dinner in Johannesburg. And unlike some of his weary team- mates, he just does not want the endless season to end. If youfeelgoodaboutyourself, youhave a smile on your face, then you are going to be pretty positive, said Onions. I used to be a bit of a sulker and get down quite easily but now I love doing this. I am in South Africa with a great opportunity to improve English cricket. I did a lot of work with Kevin Shine two winters ago and he justtoldmeIwasgoodenough to do it. You hear that a lot but when you start doing well you actually start to believe it. I got a lot of confidence from that. Then I started working with Ottis Gibson and eve- rything started to click. I have been lucky that over those two years I have moved on quite fast. BY NEAL COLLINS PAKISTAN VWEST INDIES GROUP A, SKY SPORTS 1, FROM 1PM CenturionatCenturion A CENTURY from Tillakaratne Dilshan helped Sri Lanka kick- off the Champions Trophy with a huge 55-run Duckworth-Lewis victory over a rusty South Africa at a soggy Centurion. The right-handed opener made batting look easy on a slow pitch, eventually finishing with 106 from 92 balls after sharing a record 158-run partnership with Kumar Sangakkara (54) -- the highest for all wickets for Sri Lankans against the Proteas. Mahela Jayawardene (77) also cashed in late on to set their opponents 320 for victory -- and the home team never got close.
