The Liberal Democrat leader unveiled plans at the party conference in Bournemouth for a levy of 0.5 per cent on more expensive properties. The additional tax would apply to the value above 1m, which means a property worth 1.5m would lead to a charge of 2,500 a year, and 15,000 would be charged on a 4m house. Defending the controversial new tax, Mr Clegg insisted: This is not a big sacrifice. It is a perfectly reasonable thing to ask of people who have got properties of that value, and its completely in line with how pretty well every tax system in the world works. The additional tax, combined with other Lib-Dem initiatives, could scupper the re-election hopes of several Lib-Dem MPs in the capital. Mr Clegg has already signalled he plans to shelve his partys flagship policy of abolishing university tuition fees and tightening rules on capital gains tax. He also wants to raise the starting rate of tax to 10,000, taking four million low-paid workers out of tax altogether. Both designs are on sale, with credit crunch chocolate bars, described as thats a mouthful, at their conference in Bournemouth. Cups of cheer: the Lib-Dems are buying into a brighter future at Bournemouth Vince&Nick,a coupleofmugs Toriesrapped oneconomyPVINCE Cable today launched a savage attack on George Osborne as the Liberal Democrats called for a TV showdown on the economy. The party sought to play its trump card with a debate between Mr Cable, shadow chancellor Mr Osborne and Chancellor Alistair Darling. Turning his fire on Mr Osborne, the Lib-Dem Treasury spokesman said the Torys business experience was limited to running the Bullingdon Club bar account. PTHE Liberal Democrats today backed a package of measures to clean up politics, as anger at the MPs expenses scandal boiled over at the party conference. Chris Davies, MEP for North West England, launched a tirade at the dirty cheating b******s who have taken every opportunity to fill their private pockets with public money. Mr Davies added: I want them exposed, I want them punished, I want them thrown out. They should play no part in public life. Honesty should be the hallmark of public life, Mr Davies said. The MEP was not the only Liberal Democrat to turn the air blue during the debate. The partys chief whip Paul Burstow attacked Tory MP Alan Duncan who was secretly filmed complaining about the expenses scandal and saying MPs were treated like s**t. Mr Burstow said: It is a privilege to be a Member of Parliament. We are not treated like s**t. The party called for MPs who broke the rules to face criminal investigation and the adoption of all the committee on standards in public lifes recommendations.Tirade: Chris Davies -- TV fashion guru Trinny WooDaLL, lefT, reVeals her 10-year baTTle wiTh alcohol and drugs Bad luck Russell, if you want a few tips on the opposite sex, call me -- lib-dem mP LemBiT opik boasTs how his underwear model girlfriend KaTie green snubbed womaniser russell brand for him I think about it every day... probably 20, 30, 40 times a day -- chelsea sTar John Terry is sTill haunTed by his PenalTy miss ThaT cosT The blues The chamPions league TroPhy lasT year DiSTriBUTion heLpLine: If you have any comments about the distribution of London Lite, ring 020 7651 5276, or email By using mobile services in Lite you may receive occasional SMS/email messages from Lite and other DMGT Plc companies.
