Do The Right Thing (18) ITS 1989, and on the streets of Brooklyn, the temperatures -- and the tempers -- are baking. Spike Lees best film gets a welcome airing at the BFI, with Public Enemy on the soundtrack and Oscar-winning Danny Aiello, right, superb as pizzeria owner Sal Fragione. BFI, 6.30pm LAST CHANCE TO SEE CASTING Lenny Henry in the role of Othello ensures a breathless audience -- greedy to see how the neophyte compares with such august predecessors as Paul Robeson and Orson Welles. Barrie Rutters production is brisk and efficient. Henry in the lead is what distinguishes it. The comedian has done little in the past to suggest he can convince as a tragic hero but when the production opened in February, he defied the doubters expectations and his assurance has since grown. His stage presence is substantial. Henry speaks the verse gravely; occasionally his diction lacks precision, and his baritone is not exactly musical. Also, he and co-star Jessica Harris lack chemistry. But this is a performance of dignity, when some of the other acting is loud and unsubtle. More problematic is the thin atmosphere -- there is little sense of the plays setting. Othello is a play that calls for grandeur, which is largely absent here. But Henrys embrace of Shakespeare must rate as a success. lUntil 12 December Thiscomiccandotragic Stage lovers: Henry and Harris IN TOwN LAST NIGHT...
