Colin Thomas, 24, remained in a serious condition today after being shot in the chest at point-blank range when he challenged masked men stealing jewellery at Costco in Croydon on Thursday night. he chased the thieves, who had burst into the shop with guns and hammers and forced shoppers and staff to the floor, but was shot with a sawn-off shotgun as they escaped. The five raiders, who wore hoods, scarves and dark clothing, are believed to have fled on foot. Mr Thomas was left fighting for life after the shooting, but police today said he was stable. Detectives are viewing CCTV footage from the scene and examining possible links to a robbery on a cash-and-carry at Tottenham in July involving a gang armed with an axe and guns. The cost of flying a hawk to scare pigeons away from Trafalgar Square has soared to almost 60,000 a year. The bird of prey is flown daily for up to four hours as part of efforts introduced by former mayor Ken Livingstone to disperse birds he dubbed flying rats. Since the scheme started in July 2003, 354,829 has been spent on hawks and 130 pigeons have been killed. This equates to 2,729 spent per dead bird. Figures show that in the last financial year the scheme cost 59,020. Mike Tuffrey, leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, said: A hawk that costs the taxpayer more than 50,000 a year is a staggering amount. The Mayor must find a far more cost-effective way to tackle the problem. Feral pigeon numbers in the area have dropped from about 4,000 to about 120. But Julia Fletcher of the Pigeon Action Group said: Its unnecessary, not only because of the cost to the taxpayer, but because its not going to drive pigeons away. She added that numbers had fallen because the birds had been starved after feeding them was banned. The GLA pays for 75 per cent of the cost and Westminster Council meets the rest. A GLA spokesman said increased spending reflected the provision neces- sary to reduce the population.
