Wetherspoonmerryas cheapbeerpullsemin JD Wetherspoon showed rivals how to prosper in a recession today when it unveiled a record set of results that defy the blight in the pub trade. the offering of cheap, cask beer and no music or television proved resilient to the downturn, at a time when six boozers a day are closing across the UK. Chief executive John hutson said: A good company should be able to trade through difficult situations. We have navigated our way. Wetherspoons profits increased 7% to 97 million for the year to the end of July, on revenue which rose 5% to 907 million. that enabled it to pay bonuses --including to bar staff -- of 20 million as a reward for good service. the company undertook 4000 mystery drinker tests over the year to check up on the conviviality of the publican and the flow of the beer. the pub chain wont pay a final dividend to shareholders while it moves to pay off debts of 87 million. We will restore the divi once we have sorted out the bank refinancing, said hutson. one of Wetherspoons biggest earners is Lavazza coffee. Its pubs open for breakfast and it sells more coffee than most coffee shop chains. As the credit crunch started to bite, Wetherspoon sold pints of Greene King for 99p. thats now moved up to 1.29 but is still the cheapest pint on the high street. Wetherspoon has opened 39 new pubs this year, taking its total to 731. Fuel ahead: Asda has led its rivals by passing on lower prices drivers delight as asda slashes price of petrolMOTOriSTS got a boost today after a leading supermarket announced it was dropping the price of its fuel. Asda said it was cutting the price of petrol by 2p a litre and diesel by a penny. The maxi- mum that drivers will now pay at Asda stores is 102.9p for unleaded and 103.9p for diesel. Asdas move follows significant rises in the price of petrol over recent months as higher crude oil prices and an increase in Government fuel duty fed through to the pumps. Figures from the AA show average petrol pump prices have risen by almost 5p a litre in the past two months to 107p. Asda said it was able to drop its fuel prices because of falling costs and the weakening US dollar. Commercial director David Miles said: Once again, we have led the way by passing on the benefits of lower costs to our custom- ers as quickly as possible. While others try to bamboozle drivers with money off vouch- ers and plastic points, we cut prices. Companies that charge more than 107p a litre are inflating their profits at the motor- ists expense. Unfortunately, they are often able to get away with it because there isnt an Asda nearby driving down prices.
