Tube/Rail: Old Street. 8pm-late, 10 38 Friday, 11 September 2009 London Lite lIsTINGs TORI AMOS may no longer warrant the muscle of a major label -- she was dropped from her long-standing deal last year -- or be famous enough for the tabloids to tail her, but she remains a formidable force when playing live. From the moment the 46-year-old appeared on stage, clad in a tight, black skirt split to the thigh, shifting her bum on a stool halfway between her beloved Bosendorfer grand piano and a two-tiered electric keyboard, she exuded an itchy energy. Amos also boasted a bewitching vocal that drove songs such as Strong Black Vine and old favourite Cornflake Girl. She did make one concession to living in England. Thank you for coming to my local, she laughed. You can all have a pint on me. New numbers dominated the show and were as good musically, if not as familiar, as the hits. This was supposed to be a stripped-down show -- she was backed only by a drummer and guitarist -- but the power of Amoss performance meant she grabbed the limelight all night. Watching her flit between instruments and flirt among fans showed that even prodigious musicians need encouragement once in a while.
