Pubs in the park THE Pub In The Park is a new, late-summer festival in Greenwich Park next weekend. Although there will be live music, the focus will be a celebration of the Great British pub. If you need to sit down they provide chairs, as opposed to squatting on a floor covered in disco mud. High production values, too, means big clubs are as much about visual as aural experience. Witness the light jockey on the balcony at Fabric or the pinpoint accurate projections at Matter: these clubs have invested heavily to make your night out truly special. Little wonder Matter -- with its stunning design, massive sound system, speedy service bars and quality DJs -- has been packed from its opening night. Indeed, the throwers of tonights bash, MN2S, saw their last party here sell out in record time, so arrive to the likes of Mr C, Luke vB and Dollz At Play. It smacks of hanging with Tarquin and Jocasta, just back from their gap year, as we discuss the trust fund type whos managed to give up the drugs long enough to put together an art exhibition. But tonight is million miles from that. For a start, the art comes courtesy of cool French graphic artists H5 -- who have produced work for Ryksopp -- and the tunes are selected by Gallic house don Etienne De Crecy. Expect a beautifully programmed left-field journey taking in everything from krautrock to deep disco and early NYC house, plus all manner of arty installations. The dcors a bit sinister but that just adds to the frisson of danger you feel entering a club that kicks off at 4.30am. As you look around youd be forgiven for thinking: Ahhh, these are the people Mum warned me about. Set your rave clock to zero and dive in to this polysexual jamboree that sees DJ Raymundo Rodriguez joined by Natalie Coleman and special guest Tini from Desolat. But its true -- the hottest tickets of the summer have been for the bashes beside the Grand Union Canal, in the inauspicious surroundings of NW10. And as soon as a mix of Les Rythmes Digitales Disco To Disco comes on, I take my cue and join the sweaty masses. Its getting hot and busy on the dance floor of the main room, so I leap up onto the stage to survey the scene. A friendly atmosphere, plus lots of danc- ing and smiley faces are what I see from my perch. Next up Tim Sweeney and Tim Goldsworthy of DFA Records play their own brand of minimal beats. In the adjacent room, the crowd is going mad to the deep house of Schwarz. There are dance music geeks, girls who are all dressed up and sweaty club- bers. But whats c l e a r i s t h a t theres a lot of love here and some brilliant music to boot. The arches arent big but the vibe is great -- it feels chocka by midnight and theres a full and throbbing dance floor. The music is quite serious and the beats quite heavy, so the garden is great for air, a quiet chat and a chill-out. My top bit of the night is being out here, meeting some cool people, drink- ing cold beer in the hot night air and enjoying the vibe. Corsica Studios is a little island of light in the middle of Elephant & Castle and the people behind it deserve a round of applause for the effort they have made to put on great art and great club nights, too. On the way out, Adrian Jones reveals that in the near future theyre going to get an even bigger sound system and open a Corsica 2 offshoot.
