LITESPORT London Lite Wednesday, 9 September 2009 47 WINDINGUPWAYNEBREAKING NEWS... Gender row runner will keep medal CASTER SEMENYA will not be stripped of her World Championships 800m gold medal whatever the outcome of her gender test results. The testing process is unlikely to be concluded for two weeks but the IAAF the governing body of world athletics says Semenya can keep her medal, BBC Sport claims. The 18-year-old South African was asked to take the test following her rapid rise to prominence in 2009. The International Association of Athletics Federations says it demanded Semenya take a gender test before the World Championships amid fears she should not be able to run as a woman. Speaking after a magazine photoshoot (above) Semenya said: I see it all as a joke, it doesnt upset me. God made me the way I am and I accept myself. LAST MEETING SEPTEMBER 10 2008 CROATIA 1 ENGLAND 4 (WCQ) ITS almost exactly a year to the day that the national team gave us an emphatic reason to believe in them again. Fabio Capellos side travelled to Zagreb as underdogs as a result of the two defeats they suffered against Croatia in qualifying for Euro 2008. A hat-trick from Theo Walcott and a classy Wayne Rooney goal later, and England were officially reborn. MATCH FACTS ENGLAND have won their last nine WCQ matches, their-equal longest run of World Cup qualifying victories. They also won nine consecutive WCQ matches between 1949 and 1957. ENGLANDS last WCQ defeat was 1-0 in Northern Ireland on 7 Sep 2005. CROATIA have only ever lost two of their 34 WCQ matches stretching back 13 years. EDUARDO has scored 15 goals in 26 international matches for Croatia. If he scores today he will become equal-third highest scorer for his country level with Goran Vlaovic on 16 goals. REFEREE ALBERTO MALLENCO (SP) KEY MEN STEVEN GERRARD ENGLAND THE form of Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey and Carlton Cole means Gerrard is unlikely to again figure for his country in the position he occupies with distinction for his club. With Frank Lampard and Gareth Barry automatic choices in the centre of midfield the onus on Gerrard to start performing consistently well from a position on the left has never been greater particularly with Joe Cole nearing full fitness again. IVAN RAKITIC CROATIA GLEN JOHNSON came in for a significant amount of negative press following another unconvincing display against very modest opposition on Saturday. The 17m man has made a fantastic start to his Liverpool career but looks out of his depth on the international stage and will be in for a tough night against flying winger Rakitic. The Schalke star is direct, has an eye for goal and caught the eye during Euro 2008.
