London Lite Monday, 7 September 2009 21 mayor hopes decluttered roads will be safer for all boris backs naked streetsin thecapital with no traffic lightsSEVERAL of the capitals busiest roads could be stripped of traffic lights, white lines and kerbs under plans supported by Boris Johnson. It is hoped decluttering areas such as Oxford Street and Regent Street will reduce accidents and encourage motor- ists to use their car less. The naked streets concept has been put into prac- tice in Kensington High Street, where there was a 44 per cent drop in accidents in the past two years after road mark- ings and railings were removed. Now the Mayor wants to spread the policy across London, starting with Mayfair. He plans to remove traffic lights and conventional street safety measures from the area between Oxford Street in the north and Piccadilly to the south, and between Hyde Park in the west and Regent Street. Its about improving journeys and the beauty of our public spaces, said Mr Johnson. More and more traffic lights are not always the answer. We want to ask, what are these lights doing here? What risk are they addressing? The concept of removing safety fea- tures on roads was pioneered in Holland and has since been tested in London, Brighton and Ashford in Kent. It is believed drivers are more cautious because of the lack of signage and are forced to use their judgement, rather than unthinkingly obeying instructions. by georgina littlejohn Decluttering: Mayor Boris Johnson is clearing streets blood found in lost oaps flat FEARS are growing for a missing pensioner after bloodstains were found at his flat in Barnet.
