KEPT THESE OFF-THE-BEATEN-TRACK ISLANDS TO THEMSELVES EDITED BY OLIVIA WALMSLEY caption goes here here here jsiapo Sabang MOST people just take a day trip from Puerto Princesa to the village of Sabang to check out the Unesco World Heritage underground caves there. But this laid-back jungle town deserves a stay of at least a couple of days. At the Underground River National Park you can take a boat through the vast, inky cave. The 5km underground river is edged with stalactites and stalagmites, while thousands of bats create a high-pitched soundtrack. The beach in Sabang is breathtak- ing. Backed by limestone cliffs, its often deserted so you have the white sands and clear waters to yourself. We slept in wooden huts backed by jungle and overlooking the beach at Dab Dab Cottages (the huts sleep one to three people for about 12 a night). ElNido AFTER a few days in Sabang, it was time to set off on our mission to find the Beach. We headed for the north- ernmost tip of Palawan, to the munici- pality of El Nido and the archipelago beyond, where Garland found his ver- sion of paradise -- and I found mine. The Bacuit Archipelago, off the coast of El Nido, is composed of 45 islands and islets, each with its own unique geological formations. Towering lime- stone pillars rise from the iridescent sea, hiding hundreds of secret coves and beaches; empty white stretches of sand are lapped by aqua waters teem- ing with marine life; secret lagoons are hidden by dense mangroves. BacuitArchipelago STEPPING off the boat in El Nido you will see signs everywhere for archipelago tours. But its best to get a group of pals together and rent a private fishermans boat. Setting off to discover your own secret beach, tranquil lagoon or top snorkelling spot is a must. The fishermen will cook lunch of fresh fish on your own deserted beach, where you tuck in with your hands for that Robinson Crusoe feel. A group of eight people will pay 5 each for the day. I stayed at Glorias Cottages in El Nido, where a simple room with a balcony will sleep up to three people for about 15. There are a number of restaurants right on the sand -- our favourite was Sea Slugs, where we danced to live music on the beach and filled up on good pizza, from 3. At Squidos behind the beach we ate delicious stuffed squid and other fresh fish, starting at 5. After long days swimming and sailing, I relaxed with an hour-long shiatsu massage for 4. The term rubber time is bandied about a lot here. Nobody is in a hurry to go anywhere or do anything except soak in the wondrous beauty of the wild, rugged and breathtaking landscape. Time has no meaning here -- its an alien concept -- a philosophy I could easily become addicted to. klm (klm.com) flies from London to Manila from 436 Island life: Jenny on her own Beach.
