Drug gangs fuel a surge inguncrime A London ambulance worker today described the moment she was shot twice after treating a patient. Emergency medical technician Suzanne oRourke, 40, had responded to a call-out when she was saved from serious injury because one shot was stopped by her stab-proof vest. The other shot grazed her shoulder. Ambulance bosses voiced their anger at the attack and highlighted the dangers faced by their staff. Mrs oRourke said she was shot at as she walked back to her fast- response car after treating a patient in Kings Close, Leyton, at 3.30am on 23 August. I was on my own when I heard a bang and something hit me on my back. I must have turned around to see where it was coming from when something hit me on the shoulder as well. It hurt a lot. LONDON CRIME MuggINgs aLsO bLaMED as IwasshotTWICEona ARMED gangs and muggers are fuelling a surge in gun crime in London, Scotland Yard revealed today. Police are fighting a twin rise in the number of gangland shootings and gunpoint robberies. Overall, the number of gun crime of fences in the capital rose by 14 per cent in the past four months -- an increase of 139 offences -- according to a re port to the Metropolitan Police Authority. The biggest single increase related to street robberies where muggers claim to be armed, but there was also a significant rise in the number of shootings involving drug gangs. The report reveals a 76 per cent rise in the number of Trident gun crime offences involving gangs in the black community. Police say the number of extra offences, about 60, is relatively low and comes after a big fall in such incidents last year. Operation Trident sources say the number of gangland murders has fallen from six to three so far this year. Detectives believe they are achieving success in targeting serious gun crime and in the past four months have seized 34 guns, an increase of 13 per cent on last year. But they are witness- ing a sharp rise in shootings. One detective said: These are often drive-by shootings where people are firing at houses or cars though we also get victims who are injured. They are mostly gang-related but it is difficult to know exactly whats behind it. We dont believe there are more guns on the streets because we a r e r e c o v e r i n g m o r e weapons this year. In some parts of London the rise in gun crime has been particularly high. The number of gun offences in Brent doubled in the past four months from 31 to 63. In Hackney there was a 42 per cent rise from 43 to 61 offences. In the main gun crime boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham there were smaller increases. Scotland Yard played down the rise in offences saying that police rein- forcements had been sent to the boroughs suffering the most. The Met issued a statement saying: The increase in gun crime has not resulted in a rise in gun homicides and many of the weapons, particu- larly in robberies, are intimated rather than confirmed as present. We are currently undertaking a range of activity across the Met to combat this. by GeorGina littlejohn Ray joins cast of anti-knife film MovIE hardman Ray Winstone is to star for free in an anti- knife crime film produced by the father of murdered Harry Potter actor Rob Knox.
