A FOOTBALL fan who invaded the pitch during a violence-marred match between West Ham and Millwall today apologised and denied he was a hooligan. Richard Burgum, 29, said he was an idiot for running on to the pitch as he watched his team West Ham at Upton Park in the Carling Cup match last Tuesday. The father of three, from Dagenham, faces being banned for life. He said: I cannot believe that a few minutes of not thinking have caused all this. I want to say how sorry I am and cannot apolo- gise enough for my actions. Mr Burgums picture became emblematic of the violence at the match, which was described as the worst football disturbances seen in a decade. Mr Burgum insisted that he was not a hooligan, adding: I acted like an absolute idiot and Im not at all proud of what I have done. I lost it when we scored and ran on to the pitch to cele- brate. I have never been in trouble before, I am not violent. London Lite Wednesday, 2 September 2009 Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesnt. He began studying for The Knowledge and is currently taking the examination, which involves a series of personal interviews. Examiners at the Public Carriage Office were appalled when they found out about his past and tried to prevent him sitting the exam. The safety of the public is at risk, said one, adding: This guy killed his wife and if he passes the exam we are going to put him in a cab, on his own, picking up lone women all over London. At least one woman examiner at the PCO has refused to be in the same room as him. But the examiners were overruled by senior PCO and Transport for London officials. A TfL spokesman said that the manslaughter conviction was spent under offender rehabilitation laws, adding: If we refused [such] an applicant we would be subject to legal action. The man is understood to have convinced doctors that he was no longer a danger and was taking drugs that had brought his paranoid schizophrenia under control. Courtney Connell, a former PCO examiner, said: It is totally outrageous. The man was unavailable for comment.
