Tube: Old Street Growingupina summer of love JosePh goRdon-leVitt (500) Days Of Summer (12A) is out today. JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT is so jazzed about his latest film -- the quirky, raw, romantic and surprising (500) Days Of Summer -- hes practically bouncing up and down on the sofa. I tell him how much I enjoyed this romcom with a twist and he beams. Thanks, man. The aim was not just to make something thats funny or pulls at the heartstrings but is actually heartfelt and honest. Consider the mission a success, and give Gordon-Levitt his due as one of the most interesting young actors around. Okay, so he was a baddie in GI Joe, which is really at odds with the indie cred of Mysterious Skin and Brick, but he can explain. I got the opportunity to do this cool character with this mask and crazy costume and voice. It was a blast. Ill forgive him the aberration, but his talents are better suited to smaller films in which his comic skills (honed on six seasons of 3rd Rock From The Sun) and sly charm really get to shine. It was easy for him to appear entranced by Zooey Deschanel as the titular Summer; theyre old mates and hes a big fan of her indie duo She & Him. Every morning on my way to work I listened to her voice with these beautiful melodies and it made it very easy to play smitten. Having started acting at the age of six, Gordon-Levitt could easily have done a Macaulay Culkin and gone off the rails yet, now 28, he seems well- adjusted. I dont know if I am as grounded as I seem, he says, his face squelched into a cheeky grin. But I seem to have you convinced so well leave it at that. Grounded or not, hes very excitable, raving about his multimedia website even more than he does about the film. Its very different to be finally showing a movie to audiences that was shot so long ago, whereas online you can make something that day, put it out and have people see it and respond to it and maybe change it and collaborate. Its just a different kind of vibe, man -- its instant.
