Rail: Dalston Kingsland Imseducedby thebestwriters glenn CloSe Damages: season 2 (15) is out now on DVD. You wouldnt take your pet rabbit along to an interview session with Glenn Close. She professes to being a real wuss, yet the woman who will forever be remembered as the bunny boiler in Fatal Attraction has a stare that could curdle concrete and if she doesnt like a question she sure lets you know it. Rather foolishly, I wonder aloud if the 62-year-old actress only took the role of ruthless litigator Patty Hewes on TVs Damages, meaty though it is, because movie offers had dried up. Close fixes me with a withering look. I bristle when its intimated Im doing television because I cant get any other work, she says, and Im terrified shes about to transform into 101 Dalmations Cruella De Vil. Its just not true. Ive always gone to where the best writing is and when I was first given the Damages script I thought This is as good as the very best movie scripts. Im always seduced by what I think is good writing and in this case it just happened to be a television series. The five-time oscar nominee smiles and Im off the hook. Her angular features and rakish figure have seen her cast as powerful, sometimes deranged, women, but thats nothing like the real Close. Im a soft touch, she says. Just ask my daughter, who knows how to work me to her advantage. And most of the time these roles seek me. For Damages they wanted me from the very beginning, which is flattering, but Im honestly nothing like Patty in real life, or like most of the people Ive played. Filming in New York means Connecticut-born Close can be near daughter Annie and husband David, and shes loving the process of doing a TV serial. Sometimes there are many revisions before the day of shooting and even on that day youre given rewrites. I like what my brain does when it has to learn lines so fast, she smiles. Its thrilling to just go with the flow.
