Reunited: Jaycees mother Terry Conspiracy charge: Nancy Garrido time, youre going to fall over back- wards and in the end, youre going to find the most powerful, heart- warming story. Jaycee, now 29, spent part of her 18 years in a soundproofed outhouse at the property where Garrido and his wife Nancy lived in Antioch, near San Francisco. The outhouse door could only be opened from the out- side. Entry to the hidden garden, which had a camping shower and toilet, was through a tarpaulin cover- ing a hole in the fence. Jaycee later shared the outhouse, plus another shed and two small tents, with the daughters she had with Garrido. She gave birth to one of the girls -- now aged 15 and 11 -- when she was 14. Those two girls slept in my arms every night from birth, I never kissed them, Garrido told the Sacramento radio station KCRA. He said he was relieved at being caught, adding: I feel much better now. Jaycee was snatched off the street as she walked to the school bus stop in South Lake Tahoe, California, in 1991. The case has been compared to Austrian Josef Fritzl, who fathered seven children with his daughter and imprisoned them in his cellar. Garrido was only discovered after a security guard at the University of California, Berkeley, became suspicious as he handed out religious leaflets to students on Tuesday. Jaycees daughters were with him, and when the guard checked Garridos background, he discovered he was a listed sex offender on parole for rape and the kidnap- ping of a child in Nevada. Garrido was jailed for the 1971 crime -- he met his wife when she was visiting her uncle, another inmate -- and was on lifetime parole. When he arrived at the parole office in Concord, California, the day after the guard spotted him, he brought his wife, the two girls -- and a woman he called Allyssa. The parole officer was suspicious because he had never seen Allyssa or the girls during his visits to Garridos house. He called police and officers learned that Allyssa was Jaycee Lee Dugard. During the interview, Garrido is said to have confessed to kidnapping. Now being held with his wife, 55, on 600,000 bail, he has been charged with kidnapping, rape, conspiracy and committing lewd acts with a minor. Nancy is charged with kidnap- ping and conspiracy. Police said Jaycee was relatively co-operative and forthcoming . She and her mother, Terry Probyn, were reunited last night and are staying at a local hotel. The parents of three-year-old Madeleine McCann, who was abducted two years ago, said today that Jaycees discovery has given them renewed strength never to give up the search for their own daughter. Kate and Gerry McCann, from Rothley, Leicestershire, said: This case only makes us more determined to find Madeleine.
