IN&OUTTONIGHT I F YOU had to pin down a look that summed up this autumns huge Forties trend, then you couldnt go far wrong with the retro tea dress. Already a long-time fave with the likes of Kate Moss and Fearne Cotton, the tea dress has become a modern wardrobe staple. Ladylike, wearable, flat- tering and very pretty, these fail-safe frocks are so versatile they work brilliantly for late sum- mer -- just add leggings for toasty pins, or layer up with opaque tights and a cardie for a more authentic vintage vibe. Moss might have championed the trend with her tea dresses for Topshop, but designers such as Balenciaga, Thakoon and Moschino have all been working the retro Forties look this season. If we needed further proof that the tea dress was back, we have also spied sartorial box-ticker Sienna Miller, retro queen Jasmine Guinness, rock chick Pearl Lowe and the ultra-stylish Natalie Imbruglia all wearing them recently. Modern versions of this classic shape vary slightly from original tea dresses, but the key requirements are a pretty, floral print fabric, ultra-feminine puffed or capped sleeves and a form- fitting shape that hugs the cleav- age, nips in at the waist and flares out to skim over the hips for a super-flattering finish. You can seek out original vintage pieces, but the shops are so full of new versions that you can avoid searching through dusty second-hand rails. Affordable, authentic styles can be found at Joules. Our fave is the three-quarter-sleeve Dorchester style (69, joulesclothing.com) in black polka dot. Also try Cath Kidston for similarly authentic looks from 85. Unsurprisingly, Jasmine Guinnesss range for very.co.uk channels Forties, too -- the green- and-peach rose print tea dress (49) is fab. If youre looking for something different, Oasiss puffy, grey rose print number (50) is great, and youll also find quirky, vintage- inspired dresses at Dahlia (dahliafashion.co.uk). On a budget? New Looks styles are a snip at 25, but the stand-out is a 100 per cent silk, lilac paint splash print dress with exposed zip detail (45).
